Installing the OpenQuake Engine 1.4

The OpenQuake Engine 1.4 supports Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty) and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise).

If you were previously using a nightly release first remove the old packages and the repository:

sudo apt-get remove --purge python-oq.*
sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:openquake-automatic-team/latest-master

The following commands add the official stable builds package repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openquake/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python-oq-engine

Coming from release 1.0

If you are upgrading from OpenQuake Engine release 1.0, before you can process you have to run this command:

sudo apt-get remove --purge python-oq.* redis-server
sudo rm -Rf /usr/openquake

Upgrading the OpenQuake Engine

The following command upgrades the OQ Engine and all its dependencies if an update is available:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python-oq-.*

You have then to check if a /etc/openquake/openquake.cfg.new_in_this_release file has been created. It contains the new configuration settings that needs to be merged with your /etc/openquake/openquake.cfg. If you did not change the original openquake.cfg you can replace it with the new version

sudo mv /etc/openquake/openquake.cfg.new_in_this_release /etc/openquake/openquake.cfg

To compare cfg versions the diff utility is your friend:

sudo diff -urN /etc/openquake/openquake.cfg /etc/openquake/openquake.cfg.new_in_this_release

See an example.

Same must be done with /usr/openquake/engine/celeryconfig.py and /usr/openquake/engine/celeryconfig.py.new_in_this_release. Usually you can replace celeryconfig.py with celeryconfig.py.new_in_this_release.

Finally upgrade your database:

oq-engine --upgrade-db

Please note: PostgreSQL and RabbitMQ must be started, even on a worker node, to successful complete the upgrade. For example, the right upgrade procedure on a worker node is:

sudo service postgresql start
sudo service rabbitmq-server start
sudo apt-get install python-oq-.*
## Optional, stop the unused services on a worker node
sudo service postgresql stop
sudo service rabbitmq-server stop

Run OQ Engine, without calculation parallelization

You are now ready to run the OQ Engine. First, try running one of the demos included with the package. There are several demo calculations located in /usr/openquake/engine/demos. Example:

oq-engine --run-hazard=/usr/openquake/engine/demos/hazard/SimpleFaultSourceClassicalPSHA/job.ini --no-distribute

The output should look something like this:

Run OQ Engine, with calculation parallelization

From the directory /usr/openquake/engine, launch celery worker processes like so:

Ubuntu 12.04
celeryd --purge &
Ubuntu 14.04
celery worker --purge -Ofair &

Then run openquake without the --no-distribute option:

oq-engine --run-hazard=/usr/openquake/engine/demos/hazard/SimpleFaultSourceClassicalPSHA/job.ini

More commands

For a list of additional commands, type oq-engine --help.

Reset the database

You can reset the OpenQuake Engine to start from a fresh installation:

killall celeryd
sudo -u postgres dropdb openquake2
sudo -u postgres oq_create_db
oq-engine --upgrade-db --yes
