By now all boot modules are contained in the image.elf on most kernels. That includes the configuration (config) of the system. Although one can inspect the contents of the file, e.g. by using strings(1) on the image, it might be more convinient to provide it in a similar fashion to the core image, i.e. var/run/run_script.config.
