BibTeX

BibTex should be used according to the discretion of the PIs on the project. Regardless, the process for inline citations is as follows:

  1. When drafting a paper, PIs will write inline citations as normal, e.g. "Gentzkow and Shapiro (2011)."
  2. If the project is using BibTex, once a draft of the paper is complete, RAs will convert all inline citations to LyX citation fields and add a comprehensive .bib file.
  3. If the project is not using BibTex, RAs will instead manually add references to the back of the paper.

Plots

We use data visualization to help uncover and exhibit patterns in data and to communicate information to our audiences. Every visualization—graph, map, or image—you create should be easy to interpret and follow the guidelines in Schwabish 2014.

Each plot should be exported in both PDF and PNG format. The PDF version is used in papers/slides as it is a high-quality scalable format, while the PNG version is used in the development process as it is diffable. To facilitate reproducibility, it is recommended to specify as many details (e.g., size, resolution) as possible when exporting a figure.
