I'm not familiar with Variety, but if you're interested in a quick-and-dirty way to set a random background image, you can use the Unsplash random endpoint with some query parameters to pull a random background image of a specific size that rotates every time you refresh the page.

I'm not sure if this addresses what you're looking for exactly, but thought it might be helpful to share.

Thanks so much, this absolutely needs to be in the documentation, as I didn't know this was even possible. Options like ?nature,dark,macro, ?texture,dark, and various variations like that seem to work well with the dark mode.
