Migrated to getodk/collect#44 by spacetelescope/github-issues-import

Originally reported on Google Code with ID 343

I'm not sure if this is the right place for feature requests, but it would be cool to
have a widget to collect a path of gps coordinates. Repeating a geopoint question is
quite cumbersome. Some folks at AfSIS have had good luck with the Distance and Area
Measurement Android app.

It's the right place for a feature request.

A feature where you can add attribute data to a polygon or line (measured in the field
by GPS tracking or drawn on a satellite image) would be great! This would make ODK
perfect for my purposes! We want to use it for small holder agriculture. Mapping areas
and attribute data is essential for this work. Thanks! Great work, I love the concept
of ODK.

Hi, this feature is currently available using odk if you use the Smap server. This
is an alternate to odkAggregate that is built on top of Postgis and stores all locations
as geometries. If you specify a repeating group that contains a geopoint and give
it a name starting with "geopolygon_" then the gps coordinates collected by the repeat
group will be stored as a polygon. You can do lines the same way if the name of the
repeating group starts with geolinestring_.

Answers recorded by other questions in the parent form are stored as attributes with
the polygon. You can also store attributes against each of the points by adding non-geopoint
questions to the repeating group. The results can be shown on a map by the Smap server
or exported as shape files or OSM files as well as XLS.

This feature of Smap server is being used to monitor rain forest deforestation in Guyana
and Brazil.
An installable tar file can be downloaded from http://code.google.com/p/smap-suite/downloads/list.
For more information you can check out http://blog.smap.com.au. I also offer a hosted
service if you don't want to run your own server.

regards

Neil
