At the moment, it’s only possible to control a single instance of each kind of particle effect via the GUI. But sometimes it makes sense to have multiple instances with different settings. It is already possible to achieve this via the API, but the different instances cannot be controlled in the GUI.
The idea of this issue is to make it possible to add/edit/remove additional instances of each particle effect in the Particle Effects Management.
A possible solution could be to implement it similar to how modules can be duplicated in Darktable.
