as noted by @GillesDuvert, there exist already a jupyter backend aimed at supporting GDL: https://github.com/lstagner/idl_kernel

Since the repository above is abandoned, maybe it could just be "hijacked" and forked into the gnudatalanguage organization. Or maybe ask @lstagner if he could move the repo to us (and rename).

Both things are doable. Forking (changing e.g. 'idl' in 'gdl' in the scripts). But also and more important, telling @lstagner about GDL and this issue.

Go ahead and fork it if you want. However you may be better off starting from scratch since it probably doesn't work with more recent versions of Jupyter anyway.
