I saw recently that GitLab has a feature for self-hosted instances, where repositories can accept new issues via email. If Gitea implemented this, it would enable people without accounts to contribute to projects very easily.
This might:
Show poster information via email metadata and/or gravatar-like endpoints
Check if the email is already associated with an account
Effectively introduce a new method for third-party integration
However, a few things should also be noted:
When implementing this behavior
disabling it and
a configurable block list for certain e-mails
need to be implemented as well on a user or repository wide setting to avoid spam by certain addresses.
A whitelist will most likely not be useful here.
