Subscribers, in other parts of this documentation referred to as applications, are gossip members connecting to an overlay member from localhost. Subscribers do not contribute membership information to an overlay.

A subscriber is an application connecting to an overlay member subscribing and publishing digests of an arbitrary type containing application specific data. Gossiperl does not introspect the contents of the digests. It is only interested in the type and if there are any other subscribers on any other gossip member waiting for such digests.

An example of a subscriber could be an application reporting state of an overlay. Such application would connect to one of the members via 127.0.0.1 local IP address and subscribe to member_in, member_quarantine, member_unreachable, member_drop, member_out and member_rejoin events. It could then visualise the state of an overlay.
