frequent StackOverflowError in execution plan #22423

Does it reproduce with Gradle 7.6? |
I just hit this today in Gradle 7.5.1. 100% reproduces for me in my project.

For me, the
Also, only happens with I have a compile failure in |
Can we get a backport of #21542 to 7.5? We have had to revert our upgrade to 7.5 because of this issue. |
This looks like a good candidate. However since this happens on many projects in a non reproducible way, I personally cannot tell if it will fix the issue. We'd have to move to a milestone version of 7.6 for all projects, which doesn't quite look like a good idea for production. |
Should be fixed by #21581 |
Tried to repro with latest nightlies, but I could not repro, so seems fixed in 7.6 nightlies. |
Expected Behavior
Gradle shouldn't fail.
Current Behavior
Sometimes, Gradle fails with a stack overflow error: https://ge.micronaut.io/s/v3sn2yfemaw2e/failure?expanded-stacktrace=WyIxIl0&focused-exception-line=1-0#2
Context
We started seeing issues in August, but didn't notice it yet. The first scan we have showing this error is here: https://ge.micronaut.io/s/4oxwt2b6jvww4/failure?expanded-stacktrace=WyIxIl0&focused-exception-line=1-0#2 but it is possible that the error surfaced before, as all our users don't see this.
Since last week, the frequency of those errors increased significantly: https://ge.micronaut.io/scans/failures?failures.failureClassification=all_failures&failures.failureMessage=java.lang.StackOverflowError%20(no%20error%20message)&search.relativeStartTime=P28D&search.timeZoneId=Europe/Paris#
Steps to Reproduce
It isn't reproducible directly. The error seems non deterministic and happens on several projects.
Your Environment
