We originally removed all references to pidfiles to get rid of a dependency with a license that brought concerns. See #30
While this removal is OK for us, it was never the intention to merge it to the upstream. Now that we are working on the merge we realize it makes our diff bigger and more complicated to work with. So this PR gives another solution to the problem: implement the pid funcionality without the need of the dependency. This should be mergable to the upstream.

For easier reviewing, the first commit can be ignored. It's just the revert of the deletion.
