What is 'On The Fly'?

On The Fly is a simple, dynamic TvT scenario for Arma Reforger, in which OPFOR has to defend a metal barrel while BLUFOR has to capture it.

How to play OTF?

At minimum you need two players to be slotted in, OPFOR commander and BLUFOR commander, because these roles have special abilities and are needed to get the game started.

image

Both factions spawn near the airfield in the north of everon, marked on the map. Later they will be teleported to their start locations.

image

The gamemode consists of 4 phases: GAMEMASTER, OPFOR, BLUFOR and GAME. GAMEMASTER, OPFOR and BLUFOR are combined with a countdown from 5 min to 0. This should help to hurry and not to waste any time in preparation. It's not a hard limit and nothing will happen if the time is running down except an alarm sound and the digits becoming red. In the GAME phase there is no countdown but a timer showing the time since the GAME phase started.

GAMEMASTER phase

This phase has a preparation purpose only. The players can't do anything meaningful to progress the gamemode. An admin needs to enter the Gamemaster Mode to advance to the next phase by pressing the dedicated button.

OPFOR phase

In this phase the OPFOR commander needs to choose the spawn location for Opfor. He does that by opening the map and creating a non-private custom marker (double-click on the map and choose custom marker on the top) with the text 'opfor' (not case-sensitive). This will immediately teleport all Opfor players to that location.

image image

For your own convenience, please use flat and non-woodland, non-urban spawn locations like fields or streets that are a good amount away from water. That way it's easier to find the barrel which is teleported with you. This also prevents spawning on top of buildings and so on.

The second step for the Opfor commander is to choose the final location of the barrel by picking up, moving and placing the barrel at it's final location. You can pickup the barrel via the provided interaction. The barrel is now part of your inventory.

image image

You can search for a nice spot to defend the barrel and place it there either by drag-and-dropping the barrel out of the inventory (this is not very precise; the barrel spawns near you) or by equipping the barrel like a weapon. This will allow to place the barrel precisely with a blue translucent placement indicator. A left click places the barrel. See Placement Bug for additional information.

image

The final step for the commander is to end the OPFOR phase by executing the 'Finish Opfor Phase' interaction (it's a hold action). This starts the BLUFOR phase. From now own the barrel can't be moved anymore.

image

The barrel has an additional interaction point to allow accessing a shop for weapons and fortifications. See 'The Shop' for more details. The shop items can be purchased from the start of the OPFOR phase until 5 minutes after the GAME phase started. In the upper right corner you see your current balance. The Opfor commander starts with 5000$ and every other soldier with 200$.

image image

You can also buy sandbag fortifications. They are becoming part of your inventory and can be placed like the barrel. Keep in mind that you can rotate the placing while in precise placing mode with 4 and 6 on numpad.

image

Every fortification that is still in the player's inventory 10 minutes after start of the GAME phase will be deleted automatically.

Once placed fortifications are still pickupable for a certain amount of time.

BLUFOR phase

In this phase it's the Blufor commanders turn for preparation. On the map every player can now see a red flag indicating the position of the barrel and a red circle indicating the 1 km spawn prevention zone. Now the Blufor commander needs to chose the Blufor spawn location like the Opfor commander did by creating a custom map marker with the text 'blufor' (not case-sensitive). This will immediately teleport all Blufor players to that location around a flag with a traffic cone. See also teleport hints under 'OPFOR phase'. With the teleport done the GAME phase starts immediately.

image image

The flag is not moveable. It contains a shop interaction like the Opfor barrel for purchasing weapons, ammunition and vehicles. See 'The Shop' for more details.

image image

If you decide to buy a vehicle then this vehicle will spawn at the location of the traffic cone. Therefore it's a good practice to relocate the traffic cone (like the barrel or the fortifications) before spawning any vehicles. Look for an open space far away from trees and buildings on a mostly flat surface (no steep terrain).

GAME phase

Now it's up to Opfor to defend the barrel. Blufor needs to conquer the barrel. The phase runs until one of the winning conditions is met. On the upper corner you see a timer showing the time since the GAME phase started. It's also visible in the spectator, on the map or in inventory.

Win Conditions

There are two win conditions for Blufor, eleminating Opfor or conquering the barrel. Conquering the barrel is done by activating the smoke at the barrel. The smoke is smoking for 120 seconds while changing it's color from green to red. If the time is running up then Blufor wins, even if there are still Opfor players alive.

The smoke can be disabled by Opfor any time which resets the counter.

Opfor has only one win condition, eliminate all Blufor players while defending the barrel.

The Shop

The shop is available for all Blufor (Flag) and Opfor (Barrel) players. Both commanders have 5000$ and all other soldiers have 200$ in their wallet (see inventory). That means that only commanders can buy vehicles, large fortifications and weapons. Players can buy smoke, grenades and ammunition. But the commander can decide to buy weapons for his teammates.

The shops are only available for a certain amount of time, see the phases. Bought fortifications will be deleted from inventory if not placed after a certain period, see the phases.

It's a good idea to buy backpacks. This will increase the amount of items that a player can carry.

Known Issues

This Gamemode for Arma Reforger is still under development. Expect to experience unintended gameplay or bugs. Please give us feedback at any time and provide useful information like screenshots, logs and steps to reproduce. This will allow us to fix these issues as soon as possible. Feel free to create an GutHub issue.

Placement Bug

Probably because of a bug within vanilla Arma Reforger the objects like the barrel, the fortifications or the traffic cone have no collision after they where placed with the precision placement method (blue translucent preview). The fortifications will still block bullets but you can run through them. This is already reported to BI. If you want to prevent that and precision is not that necessary then use drag-and-drop from the inventory. In that case the placed objects will have collision.

Teleport Problems

It's possible that not all players will be teleported automatically. In that case the Gamemaster needs to teleport them manually. Please write an issue if that happend to you.

Map Marker Problems

If some map markers does not show up like the red flag and the red circle after the OPFOR phase then please write an issue.

Mines

The mines that Opfor can buy in it's shop are anti-vehicle mines. Running on them is possible. But you can let them explode if you shoot them. Then it's like a remote explosive. You only need line of sight.

Spectator

As part of the Lobby Mod there is a Spectator which you will automatically enter. We think it's self-explanatory. With a push-to-talk hotkey like in the Lobby itself you can talk to others.
