Add missing reserved words so compiler knows to use array syntax: #940

The added reserved words are:

  • await
  • null
  • true
  • false

IE 8 was failing to compile Handlebars-generated source code
because it had helpers.null.

I came up with this list by diffing
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Lexical_grammar#Keywords
against the ones Handlebars already had.

Can you add a test case for this. We run our tests in Sauce including on old IE so that would prevent regression in the future.

@mattflaschen

Sure. It's now testing both the dot syntax and bracket syntax paths.

That assert require is going to break when tested in the actual browsers themselves. I was thinking something more end to end.

    shouldCompileTo('{{null}}', { 'null': 'foo' }, 'foo');

(Or whatever the end user behavior that you say may be.

* await
* null
* true
* false

I added two corresponding tests for nameLookup.

Sorry, I forgot the test would be run in the browsers.

I've changed it to an end-to-end test. We were using {{null}} as a way of trimming (I realize there are other ways to do that), so that's what I've done here too.

Thanks!

Could you elaborate more on the trimming? I'm not sure why you'd want to create these additional selectors as it seems like {{foo~}} does the same thing without the overhead. (Regardless of that question, I've merged the PR)

An example is https://git.wikimedia.org/blob/mediawiki%2Fextensions%2FFlow.git/2b74fa3f4088a0b61144b10f08d9b93fc0945ea5/handlebars%2Fflow_moderation_actions_list.handlebars#L4 .

I didn't write that part (though I've worked on trimming stuff with Handlebars elsewhere in our codebase). However, I think it's used because there is no Handlebars {{ entity at that location (on either side), but the trimming functionality is nonetheless wanted (so there is no space in the li before the a).

FYI, I replaced it with noop, as I think that is a little more obvious, and so we don't need to upgrade immediately (but thank you for reviewing promptly).

Gotcha. f30b3ea allows for the same with zero overhead after compilation, but that has not yet been released (and apparently doesn't support ~}}, which I need to fix) so noop is your best option right now.

* Remove all uses of :empty and :not (except where it's intentionally
  used to target IE 8). Moved the parentheses for pipelist into
  templates.

* Drop <time> and just use a <span> with a class instead.
  IE 8 was treating <time> as a self-closing tag.

  To fix that, we'd either have to call createElement on the HTML5
  elements *before* the IE 8 parser hits them (which means some kind of
  top script), or just not use the element. The latter is simpler.

* Fix scroll detection (both when to affix and updating the title)
  by using $( window ).scrollTop() and dropping
  margin-top. The latter was being used, but the actual margin top
  is 0. The problem is that IE 8 returns the computed value as
  "auto", which can not be parsed. Since it's 0 anyway, we can drop
  it.

* Provide alternative to vh unit (vh is not supported before IE 9)

* Fix trailing comma in object literal (not allowed in IE 8 or
  ECMAScript 3).

* Replace {{~null~}} with {{~noop~}} to work around old IE's strictness
  about reserved words. With null, there will be generated code with e.g.
  depth0.null, which IE 8 is not able to parse.

  I have pushed a fix for this upstream as
  handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#940

  but this works around it as well.

* Stop IE from prompting you whether you want to leave the page
  when you click on javascript:void(0) links.

* Fix big gap caused by a style that IE 8 didn't see because it was
  in a media query.

* Minor reformatting (mainly for whitespace) in pipelist templates

Compatibility notes:
- The default build now outputs a generic UMD wrapper. This should be transparent change but may cause issues in some environments.
- Runtime compatibility breaks in both directions. Ensure that both compiler and client are upgraded to 2.0.0-beta.1 or higher at the same time.
  - `programWithDepth` has been removed an instead an array of context values is passed to fields needing depth lookups.
- `false` values are now printed to output rather than silently dropped
- Lines containing only block statements and whitespace are now removed. This matches the Mustache spec but may cause issues with code that expects whitespace to exist but would not otherwise.
- Partials that are standalone will now indent their rendered content
- `AST.ProgramNode`'s signature has changed.
- Numerious methods/features removed from psuedo-API classes
  - `JavaScriptCompiler.register`
  - `JavaScriptCompiler.replaceStack` no longer supports non-inline replace

  - `lookup` opcode
  - Content nodes may have their `string` values mutated over time. `original` field provides the unmodified value.
- Removed unused `Handlebars.registerHelper` `inverse` parameter
- `each` helper requires iterator parameter

- `JavaScriptCompiler.compilerInfo` now returns generic objects rather than javascript source.
- AST changes
  - INTEGER -> NUMBER
  - Additional PartialNode hash parameter
  - New RawBlockNode type
- Data frames now have a `_parent` field. This is internal but is enumerable for performance/compatability reasons.

- [#599](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#599) - lambda helpers only receive options if used with arguments
- [#592](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#592) - Optimize array and subprogram performance
- [#571](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#571) - uglify upgrade breaks compatibility with older versions of node
- [#587](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#587) - Partial inside partial breaks?

Compatibility notes:
- The project now includes separate artifacts for AMD, CommonJS, and global objects.
  - AMD: Users may load the bundled `handlebars.amd.js` or `handlebars.runtime.amd.js` files or load individual modules directly. AMD users should also note that the handlebars object is exposed via the `default` field on the imported object. This [gist](https://gist.github.com/wycats/7417be0dc361a69d5916) provides some discussion of possible compatibility shims.
  - CommonJS/Node: Node loading occurs as normal via `require`
  - Globals: The `handlebars.js` and `handlebars.runtime.js` files should behave in the same manner as the v1.0.12 / 1.0.0 release.
- Build artifacts have been removed from the repository. [npm][npm], [components/handlebars.js][components], [cdnjs][cdnjs], or the [builds page][builds-page] should now be used as the source of built artifacts.
- Context-stored helpers are now always passed the `options` hash. Previously no-argument helpers did not have this argument.

## v1.0.12 / 1.0.0 - May 31 2013

- [#515](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#515) - Add node require extensions support ([@jjclark1982](https://github.com/jjclark1982))
- [#517](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#517) - Fix amd precompiler output with directories ([@blessenm](https://github.com/blessenm))
- [#433](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#433) - Add support for unicode ids
- [#469](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#469) - Add support for `?` in ids
- [#534](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#534) - Protect from object prototype modifications
- [#519](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#519) - Fix partials with . name ([@jamesgorrie](https://github.com/jamesgorrie))
- [#519](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#519) - Allow ID or strings in partial names
- [#437](handlebars-lang/handlebars.js#437) - Require matching brace counts in escaped expressions
- Merge passed partials and helpers with global namespace values
- Add support for complex ids in @DaTa references
- Docs updates

Compatibility notes:
- The parser is now stricter on `{{{`, requiring that the end token be `}}}`. Templates that do not
  follow this convention should add the additional brace value.
- Code that relies on global the namespace being muted when custom helpers or partials are passed will need to explicitly pass an `undefined` value for any helpers that should not be available.
- The compiler version has changed. Precompiled templates with 1.0.12 or higher must use the 1.0.0 or higher runtime.
