This will make my next steps a bit easier, and I'm not sure sure about the fallibility of that method anyway. See the comment I added.

The conversion from model points to curve/surface points didn't use the correct coordinate system, not taking the lengths of the direction vectors in account.
Also includes some cleanups of related code.
