As reported by Muzzy: http://gendev.spritesmind.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=32857#p32857
Currently the fonts are always handled as grayscale, with the brightness serving as opacity.
This works well for fonts converted from TrueType, but may prevent users from using borders in custom fonts, for example.
