Health check for backend API

If a typo is made in the definition of the backend API url this is somewhat hard to find out before the portal is deployed.
A health check like a HEAD request to the given API url could save a lot of stress - especially for beginners.
This would also be useful in the kick starter, e.g. in the form of a verify API url link
