Node-RED-lighting-management

  • July 2021 udpate: support for multiple multisensors per zone, with optional sensor debug (see Github project multisensor)
  • Heart on button denotes default scene to dim to when sensor is triggered. (Highlighted button still shows which scene is currently set.)

What is this?

  • A collection of flows that you can insert into your existing dashboard in Node-RED

What's the use case?

  • You have a load of smart lights already, perhaps different types (Z-Wave / Hue / Wifi) but nothing that ties them together
  • You want to create different lighting scenes, optionally even allowing for window blinds to be set as part of the scene
  • You want to be able to control or tweak those scenes from a nice UI, which is family-friendly but powerful

Installation & Setup

Prep Node-RED dashboard. Works fine without, but will look odd:

  • Dashboard > theme > set to dark
  • Dashboard > site > set sizes as follows: horizontal 74, 6, 2, 6 and vertical 37, 6, 3, 4

Now import the flow. It contains everything you need to get started including a single zone with UI. First in dashboard under the new page Manage Lighting, create some lights, a zone, and assign lights to zone. The IDs should be something like: zoneID = gf_kitchen zone friendly name = Ground Floor Kitchen fixtureID = gf_kitchen_ceiling fixture friendly location = Kitchen fixture friendly name = Ceiling

Create a multisensor and assign it to a zone. (Leave IP address blank, I just use that for controlling LEDs on my multisensor which is optional)

Now back in Node-RED flows, locate the flow that contains the GetUI subflow. Change the incoming MQTT path of the MQTT node in this flow to match the zone ID you created but keep the rest of that path, e.g. home/light/gf_kitchen/scene. Don't forget to configure that MQTT input to your MQTT server.

Ctrl-double click on Actuate and Store Light to open the subflow and change the MQTT output to configure with your MQTT server.

Double click on GetUI and change the zonename to match the zone that you want to control. Now edit the two template nodes and change the name of the UI tab that you want.

When creating additional zones, you do this from dashboard in order to set up lights and assign them to zones. Then you come into back end to actually add the UI for that zone by copying an existing one, pasting it underneath, then changing the MQTT path and the zonename in GetUI.

So how do you get stuff out of this, to actually control the lights? Control messages come out by MQTT and you hook your lights onto an MQTT input node set with the path like this: home/light/fixtureID

Depending on the light type, it will send a certain type of message, (on/off, dimming, colour, etc.) - attach a debug node and change the light to see what you get.

What I prefer to do is take that message and reformat it for different things I want to control, e.g. Philips Hue, Tasmotas, Sonoffs, Shelly dimmers, KNX lights, LightwaveRF dimmers, WLED, or perhaps Z-Wave lights controlled over MQTT from another system.

Overview

  • The lighting management system has an emphasis on “architectural lighting control”
    • Strong support for light dimmers, lighting colours, lighting scenes, presence sensors. Also supports light switches (i.e. non-dimmable).
  • Designed with the following in mind
    • open-plan spaces (i.e. two or more “zones” which are spatially connected)
    • possibility of multiple presence sensors per zone (useful to pre-guess movement, e.g. turn on hall lights when you move towards – but not in – the hallway)
  • Front-end
    • simple front end: allow quick & easy light control from a touchscreen (pensioner / partner-friendly)
    • powerful front end: allow non-techies to tweak / set-up their own lighting scenes (great for kids)
    • advanced front end (separate screen): create or delete zones, create or delete lights and sensors, and attach or remove them from zones (sparky-friendly)
  • Back-end:
    • The following are all stored in global context in Node-RED, and persist between reboots: scene settings, currently selected scene, which scene to turn on with presence, current light fixture settings (e.g. percent dimmed / switch status / colour), timestamp of when fixture was created or updated, fixture type e.g. RGB / single colour, etc., scene objects within the zone each containing full suite of settings for each fixture, time delay setting (for presence sensor), ongoing sensor triggers (i.e. timestamp for presence sensing timeouts so if PIR turned the light on for 10 mins and server rebooted in the meantime, this persists), friendly names for scenes, fixtures, sensors, zones, and all mappings of sensors & fixtures to zones.
    • Subflows used to simplify setting up UIs in the back end. (Although you can create and edit zones in the front end, this does not automatically generate UIs in Node-RED. It’s better that way, as you can integrate other automations and widgets into your dashboard then just include a given lighting zone controller where you want.)
    • MQTT support for changing the scene, dimming the scene up and down by a specified amount (e.g. rotary encoder), reporting back changes over MQTT. Family uses voice control a lot e.g. “alexa set living room lights to 4” to set scene number to 4.

General description

  • Management of light "fixtures", "zones", "scenes", and "sensors"
  • NR Dashboard user interface which auto-populates sliders, colour pickers, scene selection buttons, and sensor settings based on which fixtures are in the given zone we are controlling
  • Front-end management of the system (i.e. from NR Dashboard), where you can create zones, assign fixtures to zones etc.
  • All config info stored in global context (home.light.config).
  • Light circuits or fittings (or individual bulbs in the case of e.g. Philips Hue) are called Fixtures
  • Fixtures, zones, sensors, and mappings make up 5 sections under the "manage lighting" tab
  • Scene management is done as part of this, but UI for scenes (add/remove scene, populate or set scene colours or light levels) will be under the tab where lighting controls for a given zone are. This enables e.g. family members to create / update / delete lighting scenes for that zone, on the fly. (Buttons are updated dynamically so user can test their new scene and tweak quickly)

Light control interface

  • Press a dashboard button to select a lighting scene
    • Zone lighting is changed accordingly, and stored to memory
    • Currently selected scene button is lit up
    • The selected scene is set as "default" denoted by red heart icon. This is the default scene to be used for the multisensor
  • Use sliders and colour selection to change individual lights
    • A star is shown on current scene button to denote the fact we have an "unsaved" scene (or the lights have "deviated" from the scene previously set).
  • Manage scenes within this interface: create/update/delete scenes
    • Scene buttons update in realtime as you make changes
    • The scene shows as "saved" (star disappears) when updated
    • The scene is shown as selected and saved when you create a new one
  • This UI is to be displayed on e.g. a tablet mounted on the wall in a given zone. Or just on your mobile device. Or you can interface with any other controller you like, by just sending an MQTT message to select a scene. For example I'll be using my own homemade scene controller wall boxes with multiple scene buttons that will correspond to the first 5 scenes you create.
  • Easily remove the scene management section, if you prefer not to have this option in your zone controller

Fixtures

  • Add fixture (user specifies ID, location, type, control type)
  • Includes form validation and checking for duplicate IDs with feedback
  • Show list of existing fixtures, with delete button to remove one
  • Delete fixture also removes associated fixture-to-zone mappings
  • Automatically update list when add/remove happens
  • Upon creation of fitting, current settings (i.e. light level or RGB) are generated with default vals according to fitting type (RGB / RGBW etc)

Zones

  • Add zone (user specifies zone ID, name)
  • Form validation / check for duplicate IDs with feedback
  • 3D table of zones
  • each row is a zone. Delete button removes zone and any fixture-to-zone mappings
  • each row shows existing mappings, each having its own button to remove
  • this enables user to view and delete mappings from the zone view

Multisensors

  • Add multisensor (user specifies ID, friendly location, LED IP address - currently supports WLED messages but this is a work in progress)
  • Form validation and checking for duplicate IDs with feedback
  • Show list of existing fixtures, with delete button to remove one
  • Delete fixture also removes associated mapping

Assign fixture to zone

  • Select from list of fixtures, and list of zones, to assign a fixture to a zone
  • Form validation (in case of existing mapping) with feedback
  • List showing all mappings with delete button to "unassign" (although this can be done from the zone view)

Assign multisensor to zone

  • Select from list of multisensors, and list of zones, to assign a multisensor to a zone
  • Form validation (in case of existing mapping) with feedback
  • List showing all mappings with delete button to "unassign" (although this can be done from the zone view)
  • When a multisensor is assigned to the zone, it displays the sensor with various settings within that zone

Scene Management

  • This is done under the control template for each individual zone, see "Light control interface" heading above

Note about Configuration Storage

  • The lighting system has a configuration which is stored in Node-RED's global context. It is therefore restored after power outage etc.
  • Configuration information is stored in objects. When a fixture, zone, or scene is created, the user specifies an ID, this ID becomes the object key. As duplicates would technically be possible, we therefore check for duplicates when storing such items. The key for a fixture-to-zone mapping is automatically generated as a concatenation of the fixture and zone keys.
  • We also check for the presence of the "top level" objects in the first place.
  • Most updates are done by simply overwriting the object that has the same key.
  • The UI has some basic validation when user creates items, with user feedback.
  • When you see a 5 second delay node anywhere (see screenshots below) this is there to show the validation message on the UI for 5 seconds then disappear and clear the form.
  • Config info includes the following 4 "top level" object types:
    • fixtures (including the fixture's capabilities such as dimmable single colour, dimmable RGB, dimmable RGBW, RGBWW, individually addressable LEDs etc, and the light fixture's current state in terms of its colour, brightness etc.)
    • zones. This object type also includes scene configuration as follows. When you start to add scenes to a given zone, the settings for each individual light for that scene - at the time of creating the scene - are stored in the zone. In fact, when we save a scene, we are storing a snapshop of all the fixture objects for those fixtures mapped to the zone at that time. This does mean that if we move a fixture from one zone to another then we'd need to manually update each scene, otherwise it will still change the light which has now been moved to another room. Updating the scenes is really quick and easy though, and is done again from front end UI.
