Is there any appetite for customization of the file modification indicator?

I'd like to create a PR that would allow customization of the file modification indicator - I hate that I have to give up 3 characters of my limited screen width (I use a small fixed screen) when a single character would do (my preference is a unicode delta Δ). However, @the-mikedavis seems to indicate in #6036 (comment) that he has reservations about this specific change.

Before I embark on what might be a fruitless effort, could I get some guidance from the maintainers on whether this would be a worthy submission that would be likely to be accepted?
