「コード・コンポジション入門」

今から50年程前、テープレコーダという最新のテクノロジーが登場したことによって、ミュージック・コンクレートという音楽の制作手法が生れた。テープレコーダーで色々な音を録音し、それを操作編集することで音楽作品を仕上げていく。そこから「テープ・コンポジション」という作曲の方法論が構築された。
同様に、コンピュータというテクノロジが登場したことで、コーディング、すなわちプログラムを書くことによって音楽が制作できるようになった。だとすれば、テープ・コンポジション同様に、「コード・コンポジション」という作曲の方法論が構築し得るのではないか。
音楽に限らずどんな形式の表現でも、記述と表現は密接な関係にある。音楽を記述する際に最もポピュラーな五線譜の場合、音符という記号を五線と小節の枠内に記入する。これは言い換えれば、音階と拍節というグリッド上に音符というオブジェクトを配置する、ということに他ならない。
テープ・コンポジションは、このグリッド上に音符を配置するというシステムを解体した。テープの上に記述されているのは波形であり、それをシーケンシャルにつなげていったり、ランダムに並べ替えたり、ループさせたり、重ね合せることで作曲する。そこには音符や音階や、和音や小節といった、五線譜で記述された音楽の前提となっていた構造は存在しない。記述法が異なれば、音楽を構成する時間や周波数の構造そのものが変ってくる。記述と表現は密接な関係にある。
波形編集をベースにした作曲は、今日でもサンプリングという方法で脈々と続いている。デジタル化することでその量や速度と精度は飛躍的に向上した。マルチトラックによるノンリニア編集は今やどの音楽スタジオでも日常茶飯事である。もちろんシーケンサによる五線譜的な記述も、今なお並行して活用されている。
コード・コンポジションはこの2つの記述のいずれとも異なる、もうひとつの記述体系に根差している。コードによる記述の要は計算による「抽象」である。音を生成するオブジェクトをコードによって抽象する。音を変形するメソッドを抽象する。コードで音楽を記述するということは、音楽の構造とそれを生み出すプロセスを如何にして抽象するか、ということに他ならない。まずは構造を抽象し、次にそれをパラメータによって具体化する。ひとつの構造から、さまざまな具体、すなわち音を生成することができる。この抽象と具体、つまり構造と音の往復運動が、コードによって作曲する際の基本となる。
本コード・コンポジションで用いるSuperCollider3言語では、あらゆるものがオブジェクトとして表現されている。音符(オシレータ)も波形(バッファ)もオブジェクトである。コード・コンポジションは五線譜とテープをつなぐこともできる。抽象というのは、それまで別々のものと見做されていたものの共通点を見い出すことで、異なるものを繋ぐことでもある。
波形という音の「素材」に根差したテープ・コンポジションは、今日の「音楽から音響へ」という流れを生み出した。だとすれば「抽象」に根差したコード・コンポジションは、音楽や音響をどう拡げ、どういう流れに向かわせるのだろうか? まだまだ可能性は尽きないのではないか? 本テキストの出発点はそこにある。
