I very much like Hexchat, but one feature I absolutely hate is the copy selection behavior. By default, autocopy is enabled, but it overwrites both buffers, the primary selection (used in terminal when selecting text) and the clipboard (used in GUI apps when hitting Ctrl+C). I find that maddening, because I often involuntarily select a part of some text when focusing hexchat by mouse, and all my clipboard is gone (i.e. a part of log I just wanted to send someone). I also tend to highlight lines by selecting them when reading a longer chat history - and only then I realize something I've been saving in the clipboard is gone again.

There's another option, to disable autocopy. But that requires me to use ctrl+shift+c, instead of ctrl+c. That is inconsistent with all the rest of the world, except for terminal apps, where there's a good reason for it (ctrl+c interrupts the process). I never remember this. I always use ctrl+c, paste it somewhere and hit Enter - only to realize a split second too late, that I have posted a completely different content - whatever was in the clipboard at that time. There might be different things in the clipboard - passwords, private messages, ... it happened to me just right now and I wasn't happy about it.

Please, can you either make hexchat consistent with the rest of the UI world and start using ctrl+c, or make hexchat consistent with the rest of the terminal world and start overwriting only the primary buffer with autocopy, and not the clipboard one? Please consider this. Thank you.

Well, the first part isn't a duplicate.

It is a duplicate of another issue where the clipboard behavior was introduced.

True there need to be a setting that disable the auto copy but still be able to copy text with CTRL+C. This is so annoying I am looking for an alternative after 2 years and still no solution.

@Snurre86 It is Ctrl+Shift+c

The ideal solution (for me) is for (Shift-)Ctrl-C to work for copying to the clipboard and for selecting text to copy to the X primary selection. However, I'm not sure whether it's better to implement this unconditionally (which is trivial) or to add an option to select which auto-copy behaviour to use – or, for that matter, whether copying to the primary selection should always be done.
