How do I use the index layout in a child page?

I cannot seem to use the INDEX layout directly. The page.posts variable does not exist. How do I use the same front page index posts in a sub page? My end goal is to change the hexo site from a blog-first site to a normal website-first and have a mysite.com/blog/ page.
