Since general concensus seems to be that 2048 is still save at least until 2030 and thus the recommended key length for new RSA keys, I could see use switching to 2k, but 4k seems to strong.

Please do that, then. With 1024 things fail on modern Linuxes.

I'd go for future proof security and use 4096, though. 2030 is only 8 years away, that's not too far in the future.
