I stumbled upon manta a few days ago and really like the app. From my first perspective it seems that the development isn't active anymore.

There are a couple pull requests, the site http://manta.life is not active anymore, also tried contacting though hi@manta.life and the message bounced back.

There are quite a few issues which are opened here which are really important (such as being able to add an adress to your customer). So i am wondering how we can help as well as accelerate the development of new releases if manta is not discontinued by now.

while there are some short informations about a "portable" versions, this seems to also be very important to me. I haven't found any way to specify where data is getting saved to or how to access it e.g. sync it towards several machines.

Considering manta has about 4300 stars by today, it would be really sad to see development being halted.

Totally agree !
Really sad seeing this projet development dying.

I'll try to shoot an email to the repository owner if it can help.

Would there be a possibility for one of you to fork it and we start a new repo? I sadly don't have the dev skills to be of any use, I really like Manta, but indeed a few key bugs need to be fixed.

@stwr In case of a fork I would suggest to give the ownership of the new repo to a dedicated organization in order to rely on several maintainers. Using http://openopensource.org/ manifesto is also a good idea IMO.

@brrd Do you have any organization idea ?
@stwr If we have a list of maintainers I'd be happy to overtake the project on a fork.

Do you have any organization idea ?

@PicchiKevin Actually my suggestion is to create one to manage the project, it's a very common practice: https://github.com/codemirror/codemirror, https://github.com/codemirror/codemirror etc.
With "someuser/repo" the project highly depends on "someuser" reactivity, which can be dangerous. Using "someorganization/repo" allows multiple contributors to administrate the project.

@hql287 already created https://github.com/MantaApp organization to host the project website. IMO the best solution would have been to migrate Manta ownership to this org and to give admin rights over it to more contributors. But since @hql287 does not answer, creating a new organization will obviously be necessary.

Hey everyone,

First of all, my apologise to taking "a bit" long to get back to you and thank you for dropping by.

To be honest, I'm having a mixed feeling at the moment after reading your messages. On one hand, I'm feeling grateful and happy that Manta still receives a lot of love from the community. On the other hand, it also makes me feel that I've disappointed the people like yourselves by "halting" the development of Manta.

I feel that I should be more open about my plan for Manta or at least address some of your concerns. So to answer @carstengrimm's question – "Is this project dead?".

The short answer is No, it is not.

"So how come there is no one maitaining this"? Yes, I heard you.

The main reason is lack of time. A little bit of the back story. I used to work full-time on this project during my 1 year career break in 2017 & 2018. However, by mid 2018, I accepted a new job and moved to a Europe and have been working here ever since.

At first, I thought it wouldn't take long for me to get used to with the new environment and adjust my routine, but as you probably could have guessed, reality always has a way to surprise us. 🙂

Fast forward to 6 months later, as I've now completely settled, I'm much more confident that I can get back to Manta without feeling overwhelmed. Having said that, I can only devote some of my time for it as I still have a day job, so if anyone is interested in contributing to this project, your help is always welcome. A good place to start is look at the open issues and try to familiar yourself with the code base.

Other updates:

  • The domain manta.life has been taken by someone else 😢.
  • I've purchased another one called getmanta.app instead.
  • Will update the main website and fix the email soon.

I hope my answer has given you some insight about the current state of Manta.
I've also updated my GitHub profile with my email address so if you still have questions about Manta, feel free to reach out to me directly.

Cheers!

@hql287 getmanta.app isn't responding.
Happy to provide some help if you like - I had a bunch of trouble building the project - will raise an issue if the project is going to get some love? Mike

Hey Mike,

I fixed the website. It should be working now :)
I'm trying to spend more time on this now. Feel free to open new issues or PR if you have the time.

Thanks!

@hql287 thanks for bringing the website online again, but there is missing of download section, it shows only download for Mac, and no reference that you can download it for windows or Linux in this github repo release section.

Thanks for reporting, I'll have a look at this.

We could probably close this ticket now. I managed to download both the Mac app, and the repo and get it running without errors this time.
