LeanLauncher-1.1.9-24-play-optimized.apk: debug version, with working Google Now feed

LeanLauncher-1.1.9-24-play-release.apk: release version, same as on Google Play Store, Google Now feed and At A Glance does not work

Changelog:

  • Removed Feed and native At A Glance related options from the release version. They still exist in the debug version.

Reasoning behind the removal

Before anything: the debug versions have the Feed and native At A Glance untouched, they still work like they were working before.

Now, to the point: Google has started to add new, more strict policies recently, which they now enforce harder than ever. This is a good thing. These are usually aimed to protect the end user, you. New policies include things such as restricted SMS and call log access. One of this is the ability to install third party apps outside of the Play Store, as Google puts it: We don't allow apps that let users install other apps to their devices. This may include the companion app required for native At A Glance, and the debug versions for the Google Feed, hence why they are now removed from the release version.

At the very least, the moment Google notices these add-ons in Lean Launcher, the app would have been removed from the Play Store. At worst, Lean would have been suspended, and I would receive a strike, possible even an account ban. This is not something that I want. This was a heavy decision to make, but ultimately, it is the right thing to do.

You can find a more detailed, official standpoint from Google here.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Status update Pre-release
Pre-release

You may have noticed that the launcher hasn't been updated for a while. I have a few reasons for this, but let's just say that currently, I don't have any free time at all.

However, Android Pie is now released, including the source code for Launcher3, the very base of this project. I'll try to take a look soon, and will see how to proceed.

The project is not dead, it is on hold. Thanks for listening!

LeanLauncher-1.1.5-20-play-optimized.apk: debug version, with working Google Now feed

LeanLauncher-1.1.5-20-play-release.apk: release version, same as on Google Play Store, Google Now feed does not yet work

Changelog:

  • add support for devices with very tall aspect ratios (LG G6 Oreo issue should now be resolved)
  • remove dark theme restrictions for dark search bars, they can now be used on the light theme as well
  • add option to change date format for At A Glance ("EEEE, MMMM d" or "EEEE, MMM d" or "EEE, MMM d")
  • add option to hide the horizontal line page indicator
  • filter out Huawei widgets from widget picker: unfortunately, 9 out of 10 Huawei widget caused sometimes unrecoverable crashes to the launcher. For now, every Huawei widget is black listed. If you know about a widget that is guaranteed to work, you can make a request with its exact package name, and I will see about white listing it. Please open a separate issue for every request.

LeanLauncher-1.1.2-17-play-optimized.apk: debug version, with working Google Now feed

LeanLauncher-1.1.2-17-play-release.apk: release version, same as on Google Play Store, Google Now feed does not yet work

  • 1.1.2 hot fixes an issue when certain apps were not applying custom icons in 1.1.1. There are still a few apps not applying custom icons, expect a fix soon.
  • Minor revamp of Settings categories, add summaries for clarity
  • Fix tapping app search bar, once again starts app search instead of Google search

About the future, Android P, updates, etc:
Most of you have noticed that the launcher is updated less and less. Some of you even started to say that the launcher is dead and I should f*** myself, that is not nice. I can assure you, the launcher is not dead. I have less free time that I can spend on the launcher, so expect less updates.

About Android P: No, I will not yet implement P designs. No, I will not give the P preview styles to the search bars. No, I cannot implement recent apps on devices prior to P. No, there is no Pixel 3 yet (at least not publicly available). First, Google will have to push the AOSP Launcher3 sources, and that is not going to happen until P stable is publicly released. You can check yourself when they push the sources on this link.

Also, this is very far in the future, but the idea of P and its gesture based navigation is so different than the standards set for the last 10 or so years, that I am toying with the idea of creating an alternative configuration of the launcher. So, something like this:

  • Lean Launcher: continues to have the Pixel 2 launcher design, based on Oreo 8.1 sources, nothing major changes, will NOT support gesture based navigation and recent apps inside launcher.
  • LeanPie Launcher: will probably have the Pixel 3 style, based on P sources, will support gesture based navigation, will support recent apps inside launcher, based on the sources, there is a chance that it will either support or not support devices prior P. This is a guess, but I think it may have support for older versions, with limited functionality.
