How can we get it

The data is in Open Street Map. Can we extract it from there?

I would not get it from OSM for license reasons.

@skinkie good point... Means we wouldn't be able to license our GTFS dump CC BY any longer, although we can deliver the shapes.txt as a separate file with a different license...

Just saw the @grote has python code for this. Anyone speaking python feeling adventurous to pick the code we need out of this?
