Right now the preview updates only once one presses enter and moves to a new paragraph or presses the checkmark button. What we can easily do is add a time based updating event.
The reason for this is that in the current model we need to send to content to the server to detect the programming language that code snippets were written in. On the upside the syntax highlights will be code specific rather than generic (SE is generic). Another benefit is that we have more ways to interact with the generated html code, for example we can embed gists, we can detect links to other embeddable content and it may allow us to do other interesting things in the future.
This is the main reason of why this model was chosen. We can switch to the SE model as well, not particularly difficult to do so. We'll keep this issue open and keep an eye on the overall usability and user reports.
Another idea: could you make a mandatory confirmation of the review required for users below a certain reputation? On the SE1 BioStar, we often have people posting code/tables with bad formatting.
yes, I've also considered adding this functionality - what I am thinking right now is to have the 'moderation required' flag added to each post created by a new user - but I also want this to be a feature that the site owners can turn off - for example if a new, low traffic site is built on BioStar then the mandatory review would not be desired.
The preview does not update automatically, and post title and content do not select everything once you click them.
