WordPress-Functionality-Plugin-Skeleton

The skeleton for a WordPress functionality plugin. Contains a few common functions, and can be easily extended.

Features

  • Redirects outbound e-mail from staging/development servers to the site administrator, so that users don't see tests or other unwanted messages.
  • Blocks customized plugins from being accidentally upgraded (which would overwrite the customizations).
  • Adds a flag in the footer output for an external monitoring service to check with a content sensor.
  • Prevent clickjacking for all front-end pages, with the option to exclude specific pages that should be framed.

Installation

  • cd /var/www/vhosts/example.com/content/plugins
  • git clone https://github.com/iandunn/WordPress-Functionality-Plugin-Skeleton.git plugin-slug
  • cd plugin-slug
  • git remote rm origin
  • git rm README.md
  • Update WordPress plugin headers
  • Reset version number to 0.1
  • Find/replace name
  • git mv filenames to match new name
  • Update the values of the $customizedPlugins array
  • Update the value of the PRODUCTION_SERVER_NAME constant to match your production server name (e.g., "www.example.org")

TODO

  • Disable PHPass compatability mode and increases passes
    • http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/21022
    • If patch is applied, set constant
    • Until then, call $wp_hasher = new PasswordHash( 10, false ); before WP does
      • 10 instead of 8, false to let PHPass use Blowfish or DES
      • Does increasing # of passes break existing passwords, or does it gracefully upgrade?
  • Configuration management
    • cron job runs once an hour, make sure all core/plugin/theme settings are what they should be
    • same reasons as lamp stack config mangement
    • great for documentation and deployment
    • handle single options and serialized/array
    • core
      • search engine off for dev, on for prod
      • comments off
      • look for more defaults
    • this should maybe/probably be it's own plugin
  • Add filter to make default pagination value 100 instead of 20
  • Move plugin update block message to external view
  • Turn off admin bar for front-end
    • or at least for my user account
  • Check if plugin update blocker stops wp-cli from updating. If not, add warning.
    • i think it does, but double check
  • Bring in best practices, coding standards, etc from plugin skeleton, but keep this lightweight
  • Add IDDescribeVar?
    • add wrapper function so don't have to $describe->describe();
      • describe(), or maybe just desc(), iddesc(), etc
    • remove github repo
