[Question] Is it possible to use libraries instead of binaries?

xarchiver uses external binaries for concrete operations as such as archiving or extracting.

Curiously, how was the choice done? As I understand it is possible to use libraries (i.e. call relevant functions) instead of binaries (i.e. run binaries).
