Assorted improvement to and for documentation after #203. Summary:

  • retired makefiles for sphinx
  • aligned README.md with docs (unfortunately there is no smart way to avoid partial duplication)
  • moved CONTRIBUTING.md to root (no reason to hide it in .github)
  • minor style and function fixes.
