Translations
This is the help article on how to get started submitting translations for Summit for Lemmy.
At the time of writing, translations are primarily driven by the community. If you know a language other than English, want to support the app and don't mind donating a bit of your time consider becoming a translator.
I am using a tool called Weblate to manage translations. Translations can be found at https://translate.idunnololz.com/projects/summit/summit/. You will need to sign up for an account in order to be a translator.
To add translations for a particular language:
- Go to https://translate.idunnololz.com/projects/summit/summit/.
- Create an account.
- Choose a language you want to translate for under the language list. If you don't see the language, you will need to add it. To add a language click the plus (+) button next to "Language". choose the language you want to add and click Start new translation.
- Click Translate on the right side.
- Read the text in English and type the translation in the input field. Note that often times the text with have additional context displayed above it.
- Click Save and continue to save your translation and move to the next string.
- Context is usually given for the text so be sure to read those. If it's still unclear how the text is used and context is important, feel free to ping me in the comments on the translation page or on https://lemmy.world/c/summit.
- Some text might contain weird words that start with a percentage sign (%) such as
%1$s. These are placeholders are will be filled in by the app. For these strings, translate everything else and leave the placeholder text intact. Eg. if a sentence read "There are %1$s apples", the French translation might be "Il y a %1$s pommes". - Some text mentions "Keep short" in the context. This usually means that the text is used in a place where there is limited horizontal space and long text might be cut off. For these text, choose more concise translations over more descriptive ones.
- When translating, there is a tab labeled Automatic suggestions. These suggestions are generated from past translations from my other projects. You might find that a lot of text has suggestions available allowing you to translate faster.
The easiest way to reach me is to create a post or comment on the Summit community on Lemmy here: https://lemmy.world/c/summit. Writing a comment on a release post is likely the fastest way to get in touch as these will generate notifications. I also do check at least once per day for new posts.
