<p>Raster formats aim to compact data and make it accessible fast for analysis and display. Some of them are geospatially-enabled versions of common image formats, <a href="http://trac.osgeo.org/geotiff/">GeoTIFF</a> and JPEG2000.</p>
<p>Internally, raster data formats manage two tasks - packing data into pixels, and then storing the relationship between those pixels and actual places on the globe - the 'extent' of the data.</p>
