I think it's going to be important for UAs to bring in their own 3D content to composite onto the 3D scene in a way which is opaque to the underlying website for numerous use cases:

  • non-privacy sensitive OS UX
  • OS Level social and avatar Integrations
  • 3rd party extensions and widgets
  • 3rd party social providers

I believe social is the one that's so important (I mentioned it twice) because a website shouldn't need to know the virtual appearance of the people using it. Especially if people start basic their avatars off their real faces or start doing 3D capture.

It's an incredibly important part of social XR (or metaverse) experiences that if we left it up to the developers to implement it built upon WebXR if it became a big success we would've made WebXR secure then encouraged users to give away the farm for social experiences.
