Abstract | Résumé

Publication per peer-review process is made by and for scientists. It is also a slow and closed communication channel, limiting our ability to efficiently reach a broader audience within and outside academia. Here comes Rmarkdown! Rmarkdown is the association of R and a light markup language called markdown. Through this workshop, we will learn how to use Rmarkdown and to generate html documents that can be turned into blogs, notebooks, posters, documentations. We will then learn how to deploy those html documents on Github (free of charge!) in order to expose insightful ideas, new methods or personal skills and transform the web into your own extra Curriculum vitae.

Le processus de publication avec révision par les pairs est conçu par et pour les scientifiques. C'est également un canal de communication lent et fermé qui limite notre capacité à atteindre efficacement une large audience en dehors du monde universitaire. Rmarkdown peut nous aider à résoudre ce problème. Rmarkdown est l'association de R et d'un langage à balisage léger appelé markdown. Au cours de cet atelier, nous allons apprendre à utiliser ce langage et à générer des documents HTML pouvant être convertis en blogs, cahiers, affiches et documentations. Nous apprendrons ensuite comment déployer ces documents html sur Github (gratuitement!) afin d'exposer des idées, de nouvelles méthodes ou des compétences personnelles et ainsi d'étendre votre Curriculum vitae au web.

Objectives

1. Create basic document with Rmarkdown | Créer un document de base avec Rmarkdown
2. Deploy single page document on Github | Déployer un document HTML sur Github
3. Develop static website with Blogdown or Bookdown | Développer un site web statique avec Blogdown ou Bookdown
4. Host the static website on Github | Hébergez le site web statique sur Github

Requirements

1. Make sure you have an updated version of RStudio
2. Install the code version-control system Git
3. Create a Github account
4. Run the following R command: install.packages(c("rmarkdown","htmlwidgets","bookdown","blogdown","DT","leaflet","rbokeh"))
5. Be prepared to turn into a geek or just learn cool stuff 😎
