I'd like to suggest the use of OpenStreetMap for the underlying map. Here I will add a few arguments but believe others may add more.
Google Maps does not have a decent level of detail outside developed countries and urban areas. Quite the opposite of where this app is used.
For the users who do not have Google services installed, Google Maps will not work.
Privacy issues?
Adding to 1., OSM has fantastic coverage of hiking paths, making it easier to pinpoint a location if the phone location is not active.
I'm not sure what the arguments are for the choice of Google Maps but I'm opening the topic.
Thanks for a wonderful app and the community!

Thanks for the feedback, but please use the Forum for discussing feature requests. We use Github issues for work that is ready for developers. This specific issue has been discussed at length in the Forum: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/use-openstreetmap-maps/2588
