I have an i5 8400, but I compiled the latest version(gvt-staging), and I don't see any supporting features.

The coffee lake patches have been checked in gvt-staging branch, the latest tag is "gvt-staging-2019y-02m-22d-16h-20m-42s".
You can provide the dmesg log, grub configuration and some other useful information if you met any problem.

Can you share the result of 'lspci -nn' and the kernel log?

I don't see obvious errors from the log. Driver will continue to run if firmware loading is failed. Can you add "drm.debug=2" in kernel command line to help to get more log?

I have an i5 8400, but I compiled the latest version(gvt-staging), and I don't see any supporting features.

Could you confirm the kernel boot configuration and the mkinitramfs rule?
you can find the detailed information in our setup guide:
3.2 Build Kernel
3.2.1 Build the initrd (initial ramdisk)
Use Ubuntu as example, modify /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, like below:

kvmgt

xengt

vfio-iommu-type1

vfio-mdev

For Fedora or RHEL you should make the similar changes in "dracut".

3.2.2 Build Kernel Source
git clone https://github.com/intel/gvt-linux.git

cd gvt-linux

git checkout gvt-stable-4.17

echo ""|make oldconfig

Then make sure to enable CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT, CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT_KVMGT and CONFIG_DRM_I915_GVT_XENGT in ".config", which depends on CONFIG_VFIO_MDEV and CONFIG_VFIO_MDEV_DEVICE.

make -j8 && make modules_install && make install

With these parameters added, there is no change in the log. Should I make other adjustments?

Could you help to add these kernel boot options for further debug? ignore_loglevel drm.debug=2 "dyndbg=file gvt +p"

gvt

it should be "file *gvt* +p", but not "file gvt +p", after you do that, it can enable the dynamic debug of gvt.
please make sure there is "=p" in the reference line like below:
drivers/gpu/drm/i915/gvt/gvt.c:382 [i915]intel_gvt_init_device =p "gvt: core: gvt device initialization is done\012"

@l-cd , so GVT-g can work well in your Coffee Lake machine after you find the /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:02.0/mdev_supported_types folder?

I installed Windows 10 and intel graphics driver.it work well.
but,
i915-GVTg_V5_1 and i915-GVTg_V5_2 folders cannot be found, i915-GVTg_V5_4 can only add one device and i915-GVTg_V5_8 can only add two devices.
I think the graphics core should only recognize 128M memory.
Do I need to install a graphics driver for ubutun? Do I need to specify memory for graphics ? How do it?

@TerrenceXu: Previously the SSD of my current system was running in a Kaby-Lake notebook (albeit with 4.17 stable branch), where the mdev_supported_types folder appeared. So my issue doesn't seem to host OS misconfiguration issue. Being apparently a separate problem, I have created a separate ticket (#77).

@l-cd : I can select 256 and 512MB GPU ram in the host bios. With the former selection (i.e. 256MB) I see in the virtual file system only type '4' and type '8' GPUs. With the latter (i.e. 512MB) I can also see type '2'. Have you selected the maximal video-ram size in your host bios?

What model is your motherboard?
My motherboard is ASUS TUF B360M-PLUS GAMING. I select the DVMT pre-allocated to 512MB , but can't see type '2',and can't and the second device with type '4'. select to 1024MB, but can't start, showing memory over out.

@tituslabienus What model is your motherboard? Where can choose GPU ram? Can you send a screenshot to me for reference?thanks.

Hi @l-cd did you get any news about this issue? I have the same problem and even changing the MB of ram shared with the GPU in the BIOS i can't change the behaviour of GVT (1 only VM with 1920x1080 with 128mb of ram).

@ChristophSchmidpeter

@l-cd:

  • I run GVT on a notebook (Thinkpad P72). So I don't know the mainboard's name, but it is most likely some custom Lenovo mainboard.
  • I can change it under 'Display Settings' in the BIOS, but BIOS configuration is oftentimes specific to a particular model or at least manufacturer.

I run the same host configuration on a Intel Xeon e-2176M (Coffee Lake) and now i can have 3 VM with 1920x1080, so i confirm that it's a pure hardware/bios limit.

I was facing the same problem i.e. 1 VM with type '4' and 2 VMs with type '8'.
Apparently "DVMT pre-allocated" allots Shared memory to the GPU and setting that to a higher limit won't have any effect.
I had to change the "Aperature size" in my host BIOS settings to 1024MB to see the type '1' and type '2' options for my VMs. Setting "Aperature Size" to 512MB only shows till type '2' and no type '1' in my system. If you can't see the "Aperature Size" setting in your BIOS then it's probably set to 256MB or lower and that is why you are not able to see the types '2' and '1'. For me setting it to 256MB only shows type '4' and '8'.

Yes, the limited resources are Aperture size(default is 256MB)/GTT space(default is 8MB max)/Fence.

Driver copies FW commands to the HW queue as units of 16 bytes. Some
of the command structures are not exact multiple of 16. So while copying
the data from those structures, the stack out of bounds messages are

…zones

In case we have to migrate a ballon page to a newpage of another zone, the
managed page count of both zones is wrong. Paired with memory offlining
(which will adjust the managed page count), we can trigger kernel crashes
and all kinds of different symptoms.

One way to reproduce:
1. Start a QEMU guest with 4GB, no NUMA
2. Hotplug a 1GB DIMM and online the memory to ZONE_NORMAL
3. Inflate the balloon to 1GB
4. Unplug the DIMM (be quick, otherwise unmovable data ends up on it)
5. Observe /proc/zoneinfo

more). The OOM goes crazy and the system crashes

Fix it by properly adjusting the managed page count when migrating if
the zone changed. The managed page count of the zones now looks after
unplug of the DIMM (and after deflating the balloon) just like before
inflating the balloon (and plugging+onlining the DIMM).

We'll temporarily modify the totalram page count. If this ever becomes a
problem, we can fine tune by providing helpers that don't touch
the totalram pages (e.g., adjust_zone_managed_page_count()).

Please note that fixing up the managed page count is only necessary when
we adjusted the managed page count when inflating - only if we
don't have VIRTIO_BALLOON_F_DEFLATE_ON_OOM. With that feature, the
managed page count is not touched when inflating/deflating.

Reason is that there is no Xen pv trap entry for X86_TRAP_VC.

Fix that by adding a generic trap handler for unknown traps and wire all
unknown bare metal handlers to this generic handler, which will just
crash the system in case such a trap will ever happen.

Fixes: 0786138 ("x86/sev-es: Add a Runtime #VC Exception Handler")

I wish this weren't closed because it's still broken. I am having the same issue. I have my GPU aperture set to 1024MB, max allowed and I am getting the same error. Available types shows 4 and 8, but I can't create any. Like others, I am getting same firmware error and same memory error. I am using an i7-9900k on an Asus motherboard. I used to have this working on a mainline 5.15 kernel ages ago.
