Description

I'm running ipfs daemon and am retrieving a file over the localhost gateway. When my internet is turned on, it takes about 60 - 70ms to retrieve this file once it's cached. Simply turning off WiFi on my mac brings that time down to 5 - 25ms.

Why is the performance so much worse when the node is connected to the internet? Shouldn't the fact that it's cached mean it should be the same online or offline?

Is there a config option I can set to get the fast speeds even when my node is connected to the internet?

Here's a video demo using chrome: https://youtu.be/7BVuCc3xkLI

Thanks

Thank you for submitting your first issue to this repository! A maintainer will be here shortly to triage and review.
In the meantime, please double-check that you have provided all the necessary information to make this process easy! Any information that can help save additional round trips is useful! We currently aim to give initial feedback within two business days. If this does not happen, feel free to leave a comment.
Please keep an eye on how this issue will be labeled, as labels give an overview of priorities, assignments and additional actions requested by the maintainers:

  • "Priority" labels will show how urgent this is for the team.
  • "Status" labels will show if this is ready to be worked on, blocked, or in progress.
  • "Need" labels will indicate if additional input or analysis is required.

Finally, remember to use https://discuss.ipfs.io if you just need general support.

Thank you for the amazing video. This does look like a problem, we are probably re-announcing the block in the sync path, which adds some extra latency when compared w/ offline mode. We probably shouldn't be doing this.

Before trying to investigate, I'll try to reproduce on linux, it might as well be the macos scheduler being bad at handling concurrent operations.

@Jorropo : fine if not, but were you able to reproduce on Linux?

@Jorropo : I assume you haven't had a chance to reproduce it on Linux.
