The purpose of this call is to show what we've worked on, to get help with what we're blocked on and to discuss what we're going to work on next.

After the meeting, notes should be added in a PR to ipfs/team-mgmt and video uploaded to YouTube.

Notes:

  • Now have a package managers eng team!
  • focusing on file system based package managers = primarily linux file system based mirrors
  • focused here because they are simplest in getting the whole thing on to IPFS (very compatible - set up for easy tooling)
  • signing is also contained within files
  • putting that directory into IPFS and then have people download via path, and broadcast out changes to the root hash when things change
  • improvements made here will also contribute to databased and git-backed package managers
  • things we know
    • performance of importing
    • performance of updating
    • ux of doing that as a maintainer
    • performance of gathering mirrors

🚗 Parking Lot:

  • package manager benchmarks?
    • the ipfs add work could be turned into benchmark work around different shapes/sizes of package manager repos
    • working on the individual pieces - each one needs benchmarks, not so much full process end to end for package managers
    • aka - ipfs-benchmarks can validate each piece by itself
    • might want to add a bigger benchmark to the benchmarks code (though already has benchmark for adding 100 1KB files)
    • should also have benchmarks for adding to other nodes
    • any tests you want to see just need to be suggested / PR'd to that repo and then they'll run 🏃‍♀️
    • when using an external hard drive - see some spec different performance characteristics - can use go-ipfs delay store with arbitrary latencies
    • at least open an issue for anything you don't think would fit in the benchmark repo so we can discuss / eval - have a lot of configurability
    • @djdv and @aschmahmann have some ideas on new benchmarks that would be useful
