Could there be an option to output an .rst file using the ipython_directive to an .ipynb ?

I have been using an homegrown solution to have some documentation pages rendered to .rst files for inclusion in a larger Sphinx documentation, and to .ipynb notebooks (with a link to the notebook file from the Sphinx documentation).

Could there be an option for the ipython_directive to allow the rendering of text + cells + renders into an .ipynb file?

I think that is reasonable,

I would suggest to look into Juptyer book, from which we might be able to borrow code.
Maybe look into https://github.com/jupyter/jupyter-sphinx as well ?
