When I tried to install the dev version from pip (pypi) it installed a very old version.
I am aware that I can just download from github, but it would be nice to have a simpler option like pip.

As with all projects hosted on GitHub, you can always install master with:
$> pip install https://github.com/ipython/ipython/zipball/master
