Rust-Tracer

While this began as a simple Rust port/reimplementation of Peter Shirley's wonderful books Ray Tracing in One Weekend and Ray Tracing: The Next Week, it has since grown to include features not demonstrated therein.

Notable examples of extra features include:

  • Nonhomogeneous Participating Media (distance sampling performed via Woodcock tracking)
  • Support for rendering polygonal primitives and polygon meshes
  • Support for multi-threaded rendering
  • Anti-Aliasing via Correlated Multi-Jittered Sampling

Next Steps:

  • Denoising: As increasing the number of samples per pixel begins to yield diminishing returns in image quality, it would be beneficial to implement some form of denoising (either done post-render or during the rendering process).
  • Progressive Rendering: There is currently no way verify the integrity of a scene prior to a completed render. Giving the renderer the ability to progressively render a scene (i.e. pausing and resuming progress, and writing intermediate results to disk) should help with the ability to perform scene verification as well as the ability to monitor the (relative) point of convergence.
