Concept: idiomatic phrases mean something completely different from their words taken separately. This app shows both the literal meaning and the meaning that native speakers would understand. The strangeness of the literal meaning can act as a memory device for remembering the phrase as a whole.

Revelation

A custom-drawn image illustrates the literal interpretation of an idiomatic phrase. Beneath appears the phrase itself, with a button that allows you to hear it spoken. Beneath that, are a number of possible meanings:

• The idiomatic meaning of the phrase explained in simple words
• Three distractors (chosen from the explanations of other phrases)

The user presses the explanation that s/he believes is correct.

• If it is incorrect, it will become greyed out.
• If it is correct, then
  • An illustration of the meaning will replace the illustration of the interpretation
  • The spoken phrase will be played

It will not be possible to get the answer wrong more than three times, and no reward or penalty is given for answering wrong.

Recognition

After several phrases have been shown (7?) a new task will be given. A simple sentence will be displayed with a gap (cloze test). The visible part of the sentence will create a context that will allow the placement of an idiomatic phrase that has already been seen.

Below the cloze sentence will be displayed:

• The correct phrase to use (inflected as necessary for the situation)
• Three distractors (also correctly inflected)

This task is fairly simple: it requires the user to check for a pair of ideas that have already been associated. As before, if an incorrect answer is pressed, it becomes greyed out. If the right answer is given, then the whole sentence is played and an illustration of the sentence is shown.

Recall

Here, the user must enter a correctly inflected version of the appropriate idiomatic phrase. The phrases can be identical to the ones already seen. If an answer is wrong, then the differences will be shown in red. When the answer is correct, the phrase will be played.

Revision

You see a simple phrase, and 4 pictures which represent idioms. Choose the correct image, hear the idiom.

Reproduction

Same as Recall, but the user must inflect the sentences (change of tense, person, number, ...)
