How do I access file modification time as template variable? #256

I would like to use the file modification time of any file in _posts to display:

<p>Last updated: Jan 21, 2010</p>

at the top of my posts.

Is this possible?

I know I could add this template variable into the YAML Front Matter myself, but that's annoying. I'd only want to do that to override the file modification time.
