equation numbering for some equations?

Does pandoc provide a bulit-in way to do equation numbering for select displaymath equations? I'm converting mkdn to pdf.

If I just type

foo

$$a = 1$$

$$b = 2$$

$$c = a + b$$  (<-- number this one only)

bar

the default is no equation numbers. Is there a way to enable numbering for some displaymath equations?

I notice the manual mentions native numbering, but that appears to be only for figures and tables. I didn't see anything about eqn numbering in the faq. I also browsed the wiki, but it doesn't appear to support text search within wiki pages...

Whoops. After more searching I found that any equations you want numbered should be written like

\begin{equation}
a = b + c
\end{equation}

(rather than $$a = b + c$$).

That's one approach. Alternatively you could use our syntax for numbered example lists:

(@foo) $x=y^2$

As shown in equation (@foo), ...

The numbers will be on the left though.
