There were a couple of proposals several years ago on pandoc-discuss for a method of indicating small caps in Markdown, both of which seem to have fizzled out without any particular conclusion. Much as it would be nice to have something short, one can certainly make the argument that it's not desirable to introduce new syntax for this. Still, there are occasions when one needs them; could their use be allowed via an HTML span, as supported in some other versions of Markdown?
