There were a couple of proposals several years ago on pandoc-discuss for a method of indicating small caps in Markdown, both of which seem to have fizzled out without any particular conclusion. Much as it would be nice to have something short, one can certainly make the argument that it's not desirable to introduce new syntax for this. Still, there are occasions when one needs them; could their use be allowed via an HTML span, as supported in some other versions of Markdown?

<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">This is text will be rendered in small caps.</span>

This isn't currently rendered by pandoc (1.12.4.2) in anything other than HTML (nor is \textsc{text in small caps} rendered in anything but LaTeX).

That was quick. Thanks very much!

I should perhaps point out, to avoid potential confusion among future users, that technically there could be a space between the colon and the attribute value, and that the semicolon is optional. Would you also mind adding this to the Markdown writer?

(I should note that I don't totally understand the code: apologies if these notes are redundant.)
