As suggested by @jgm in the mailing list, it would be great to have the language attribute abbreviated as :lang.

Abbreviated language samples could be :grc, :de-DE, :de-1901.

The way to do this would be to add a new syntax extension, perhaps lang_attributes, that affects both the Markdown reader and the Markdown writer.

@jgm, I’m really interested in that solution. I have been waiting years for this.

Since it might take a while before the release of pandoc-2.0, I have an interim proposal. I think this is an easy implementation. Excuse my ignorance, if my proposal is more complicated than I think.

How about in a quick fix that replaces lang="lang" with :lang only in the Markdown reader and the syntax extension also for the writer when pandoc-2.0 is released?

I would need this for writing multilanguage documents (so I can apply the commit as a patch to latest released version and recompile it).

Many thanks for your help.

@jgm, many thanks for the release of version 2.

Could this feature be considered to be implemented now?

Reopening, since I closed it by accident.

@jgm, many thanks for new release 2.14.

Any chance to see the extension lang_attributes implemented, as you suggested more than 4 years ago?

Many thanks for your excellent work and your help.
