Troubleshooting

Joy of Painting uses advanced scripting and 3rd party tools which modify files in real time, so proper installation can be tricky.

If you are having issues, such as crashing to desktop, the painting mechanic not working properly, or the mod isn't being detected at all, first confirm the following:

  1. Crafting Framework is installed. To confirm - look for "The Crafting Framework" option in the Mod Config Menu.
  2. MWSE is up to date - run the MWSE-Update.exe which comes with MGE XE and is located in your Morrowind install location.
  3. Morrowind is NOT installed in /Program Files. This mod will not work if the game is installed here.
  4. Image Magick is installed. To confirm, open a command prompt and type magick -version. If this says "not found", try re-installing as admin.
  5. Morrowind is running in windowed or borderless fullscreen. Users have reported crashes when Morrowind is running full screen. You can change this to borderless window in MGE XE.

If you have followed all these steps and are still having issues, do the following:

  1. Enable DEBUG logging in the Joy of Painting MCM.
  2. Replicate the issue (e.g, start a game and try to paint something).
  3. Close the game and find the MWSE.log and, if you're experiencing crashes, the MWSE_MiniDump.dmp files.
  4. Create a new issue on the Joy of Painting Issues page
  5. Describe your issue and upload your log and minidump (if applicable)

Common Issues

Image Magick installed but not recognised by Morrowind

If for some reason Image Magick is not found by Morrowind even though it has been installed, try installing the standalone version on the Downloads Page. Install the standalone version as you would a mod, either through a mod organiser or by extracting into your Morrowind install directory.

Morrowind crashes when you go to paint

Make sure the game is not full screen (set Borderless Window in MGE XE settings).

Morrowind crashes on startup

Install the standalone version of Image Magick available on Nexus or change to borderless window mode in MGE XE.

Painting doesn't do anything

  • Make sure Morrowind is not installed in \Program Files
  • Make sure Image Magick is properly installed (use the standalone version)
  • Make sure all other dependencies (Skills Module, Crafting Framework, MGE XE, MWSE) are installed and up-to-date

No viewport or painting effects

Make sure Shaders are enabled in MGE XE.
