Or is this something that clientbuffer (which purpouse I haven't understood) would fix? How does it behave with clearbufferonmsg?

The faulty behavior seems to be caused by the *playback module. You could use

/msg *playback play #chan 

as a temporary workaround until I manage to fix it somehow. Sorry for the inconvenience.

*clientbuffer is essentially the same than setting autoclearchanbuffer=true & autoclearquerybuffer=true, but for a single client identifier.
