Kris Zyp reported that NPM treats the "main" config to be relative to package root vs. relative to lib. Check the spec proposal and NPM to confirm, then look at doing the change.

Closed by 2bd9d9a, main path config for packages was not in line with the spec or npm. Will cause some adjustments by people who use package config, but now impl is in line with the packages 1.1 spec draft and npm.
