sometimes, it's not so easy to have local Git clone exactly as used when doing a release, for example when the build was done on Windows: in such case, rebuild differences are not really tied to the build process, but to the environment, then we can't reproduce with reproducible-central automation something that we can perfectly reproduce by hand

This is usually visible when we can't reproduce -sources.jar and diffoscope shows that it's a newline issue on some files

Being able in this case to build from a source distribution (like Apache Foundation *-source-release.zip) would be useful.
For example, this will be useful for:
