The goal of this prototype was to get the Max Mind GeoIP data into MongoDB and compare how fast it could be queried via Node.js. I didn't get around to the Node part initially, instead focusing on loading the MongoDB data and figuring out an efficient way to index the collections for quick querying.

> use geoip
switched to db geoip
> show collections
blocks
locations
system.indexes

> db.system.indexes.find()
{ "name" : "_id_", "ns" : "geoip.locations", "key" : { "_id" : 1 } }
{ "_id" : ObjectId("4c768c817b74345d5cfaf3f9"), "ns" : "geoip.locations", "key" : { "locId" : 1 }, "name" : "locId_1" }
{ "name" : "_id_", "ns" : "geoip.blocks", "key" : { "_id" : 1 } }
{ "_id" : ObjectId("4c769c4b091b732b6cbfd883"), "ns" : "geoip.blocks", "key" : { "s" : 1, "e" : 1 }, "name" : "s_1_e_1" }
{ "_id" : ObjectId("4c769cd6091b732b6cbfd885"), "ns" : "geoip.blocks", "key" : { "s" : 1, "e" : -1 }, "name" : "s_1_e_-1" }
{ "_id" : ObjectId("4c76a111091b732b6cbfd886"), "ns" : "geoip.blocks", "key" : { "e" : 1 }, "name" : "e_1" }

I loaded blocks and locations from a CSV dump of GeoLiteCity data. Here is an example:

blocks.csv
s,e,locId
16777216,17301503,17
17367040,17432575,153
17435136,17435391,17
17498112,17563647,119
17563648,17825791,49
17825792,18087935,119
18153472,18219007,111
18219008,18350079,103
18350080,18874367,49

location.csv
locId,country,region,city,postalCode,latitude,longitude,metroCode,areaCode
1,"O1","","","",0.0000,0.0000,,
2,"AP","","","",35.0000,105.0000,,
3,"EU","","","",47.0000,8.0000,,
4,"AD","","","",42.5000,1.5000,,
5,"AE","","","",24.0000,54.0000,,
6,"AF","","","",33.0000,65.0000,,
7,"AG","","","",17.0500,-61.8000,,
8,"AI","","","",18.2500,-63.1667,,
9,"AL","","","",41.0000,20.0000,,

Here's an example of querying on an IP in Mongo

> db.blocks.find( { s : { $lte : ip2long("80.27.101.109")}}).sort({s:-1}).limit(1)
{ "_id" : ObjectId("4c7693aa9e99ca785cb2e263"), "s" : NumberLong( 1.34397e+09 ), "e" : NumberLong( 1.34405e+09 ), "locId" : 14359 }

And here is looking up that Location
> db.locations.find({locId: 14359 })
{ "_id" : ObjectId("4c768bc19e99ca785c5d588d"), "locId" : 14359, "country" : "ES", "region" : 29, "city" : "Madrid", "postalCode" : "", "latitude" : 40.4, "longitude" : -3.6833, "metroCode" : "" }
